Projects
In addition to producing
publications and offering courses and membership services, CDEC
does a large amount of project work, supported by grant funding
from a variety of sources, including the Department for International
Development, Oxfam, and various local sources such as Excellence
Clusters and the LEA.
Current Activities
Going Global in the Outdoor
is a major project working towards bringing the global dimension
into the outdoors. It is made up of 2 strands:
A key stage 1 project
in which a team of teachers are producing a big book called ‘Meet
Zogg’ and accompanying resources.
A three year project
in which CDEC are working with outdoor providers throughout Britain
to produce an Internet based database of good practice, to share
and learn from.

Outside the Box is a
national conference for those interested in global education in
the outdoors with a particular focus on sustainability. CDEC have
been working with outdoor educators nationally to share and develop
good practice. This is an excellent opportunity to meet like minded
professionals in the field and gain from the wealth of experience
shared by the presenters.
Recent work
Recent projects include
Keeping Diversity on Track, which worked with schools along
the Settle-Carlisle train line using Philosophy for Children to
explore issues of diversity and social justice and Going Global
in the Outdoors, which extended previous work in Grizedale forest,
bringing a global dimension into outdoor education. CDEC is also
currently working on 'toolkits' for both School Linking and for
Philosophy for Global Citizenship which will be available in the
near future.
West Cumbria
We also work at a more
local level through our outreach bases. In West Cumbria, we have
been working with West Cumbria Excellence Cluster to develop a programme
of support for Cluster schools in delivering Global Citizenship
Education.
East Cumbria
Project Aim: to introduce
the concept of diversity in Early Years provision Key outcome: for
children to understand that diversity is intrinsic to the world
around them and to develop the confidence to interact positively
within such a diverse environment.
Six practitioners from
six Early Years settings in East Cumbria are trying out a variety
of activities with 3 - 5 year olds, to encourage an appreciation
of diversity. They will pair up to swap work and experiences - with
a trip for the children to a partner setting in the summer term,
and share best practice as a group (meeting with CDEC). CDEC hope
to find further funding to develop this work further (across Cumbria)
after this pilot project (funded by SureStart) ends in July 07.
